For LeShawn Holcomb, education is more than a profession—it is the fire behind his passion and a responsibility he carries personally and purposefully.

There was a time when LeShawn did not see school as a place where he belonged. But educators entered his life who saw his potential, challenged him, and gave him something every young person deserves: a place to belong and an opportunity to discover who he could become.

Those experiences changed the trajectory of his life and shaped the belief that has guided his career ever since: every child deserves to learn, grow, and thrive.

Today, LeShawn is a Marin City resident, longtime educator, nonprofit director, and Trustee on the Sausalito Marin City School District Board of Trustees.

LeShawn has dedicated his professional life to serving young people and families. For over nine years, he worked at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, where his roles included theater teacher, English Language Arts teacher, and instructional coach. 

Today, LeShawn serves as Dean of Students at a neighboring high school, continuing his work alongside students, families, educators, counselors, and administrators. His work focuses on student belonging, attendance, academic success, school culture, and accountability. His experience working with students across grade levels gives him a perspective that connects the elementary and middle school experience with the transition into high school and beyond. 

Beyond the classroom, LeShawn is the Founder and Executive & Artistic Director of Griot Theater Company, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create equitable outcomes for youth of color through intergenerational storytelling, entrepreneurial leadership, and education. 

LeShawn holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Services and Afro-Ethnic Studies from California State University, Fullerton, as well as graduate training in Urban Education and Social Justice and English from the University of San Francisco. His work has consistently lived at the intersection of education, youth development, the arts, and community.

In 2026, LeShawn stepped forward to serve on the Sausalito Marin City School District Board of Trustees and is now a candidate for the district’s governing board in the November 3, 2026 election. 

For LeShawn, serving on the School Board is about more than occupying a seat. It is an opportunity to bring his experiences as an educator, nonprofit leader, and community member to the work of public education—and to participate in a defining chapter for the Sausalito Marin City School District.
